Perhaps jerry's best ballad ever, simple and pure. The version on DP 12 from the Boston Garden 1974 is as good as they ever played it. First the recording is mindbendingly pristine and the band in outstanding form. In fact, this whole second set is underrated and quite solid. I love the opening after Seastones when Jerry asks "What are we doing?" and you can hear Phil clearly say "Ah, Sugar Magnolia and Scarlet Begonias." And sure enough don't you get it... Heavy duty... And back to this To Lay me Down, the lead Jerry plays nearly blows the speakers off the scaffolding. All lost in dreaming, to tell sweet lies, one last time, and say goodbye...

I love this tune. Time and jerry's voice were the reason they had to put this to bed. I was listening to the Lake Placid show from 83 with the great Sugaree opener. The second set TLMD caught my eye. Great effort but his froggy vocals were tough, but they do make up for it in with a spirited ending. That 1974 version you suggest must have him in top form though.

i also heard the last one jerry ever sung back in 1992.
even though he 92 was not his best year he manages to
pull out a decent version.

Good Captain & Bob,

you are so, so, so right .......

Listen to this (especially lying next to the one you love) in a darkened room and it all becomes crystal clear.

Masterpiece to end all masterpieces of its kind.

Best wishes,
